Description:

This article describes how to test a server's RAID array to find faults that may cause corrupted or excessively large files and folders.

Symptom:

    • Depending on the number of recorded videos that are being written to a RAID array, it's possible that the RAID array may not be able to meet those strenuous requirements.

Possible Solutions:

    • Run the Hard Drive Writing Speed Test

      • Steps:

1.  Download the Hard Drive Writing Speed Test tool: Click Here.

2.  Log into Windows as a Local Windows Administrator.

3.  Verify that IP Server service is OFF during the test so that the results are accurately calculated.

          • Right-click on the IP Server icon in the lower right corner of the system tray.
          • Select Stop IP Server.
          • Remember to restart the IP Server once testing is completed.

4.  Extract the Hard Drive Writing Speed tool on the drive or RAID array that is to be tested.

5.  Right-click the Hard Drive Writing Speed tool and choose Run as Administrator.

6.  When the application runs, enter the number of cameras that you are currently recording to the storage drives.

7.  Enter the Frame Rate at which the cameras are being recorded.

8.  Choose the Average Image Size.

9.  Choose the most commonly present Image Format of the cameras.

10. Browse to the Video storage directory and then click Start.

The application will simulate writing to the drive(s) using these parameters.

    • Reading the Results

NOTE: The goal is to have the Target values be as close as possible to the Actual Values.

1.  Target Values are slightly higher than Actual Values -

          • The hard drive(s) could possibly be having issues handling the amount of data being written.

2.  Target Values are roughly 50% higher than Actual Values -

          • The issue could reside in network storage issues or bottlenecking on the network.

3.  Target Values are roughly 75% higher than Actual Values -

  • The storage drive(s) are possibly failing or could fail soon. Files or folders could be corrupt or no longer readable.
